Background

The Ohio University Center for Advanced Software Systems Integration serves the manufacturing community, government, and people of Ohio by developing manufacturing software systems integration strategies, systems and technologies and by disseminating the knowledge gained from their evaluation and synthesis.

Software systems integration is becoming more important as the complexity and quality requirements of modern, world class manufacturing systems necessitate computerized design and validation methods. Typically, the systems design function (product design, manufacturing process design, and manufacturing systems design) is performed by separate engineering design teams using different engineering tools and software programs to model and design different aspects of the system. In product design, concurrent engineering (CE) design paradigms show that high levels of communication among these functions are necessary to reduce design errors or reduce the likelihood that assumptions from one design team will unduly restrict another design team. SSI is a CE approach that connects separate software tools by using a common data base and by superimposing sufficient intelligence among the tools, in order to identify and correct inconsistencies in the system design.
